What is fernando magallanes?

Fernando Magallanes, also known as Ferdinand Magellan, was a Portuguese explorer who led the first expedition to circumnavigate the globe. He was born in Sabrosa, Portugal, in 1480 and served in the Portuguese navy before offering his services to King Charles I of Spain in the early 1500s.

In 1519, Magallanes set out with five ships and a crew of over 200 men to find a new route to the Spice Islands in the East Indies by sailing westward. After navigating through the treacherous waters of South America's Strait of Magellan, Magallanes and his crew crossed the Pacific Ocean, where they discovered the Philippines. There, Magallanes was killed in battle with local tribes in 1521, but his expedition continued under the leadership of Juan Sebastián Elcano.

In 1522, Elcano and the remaining crew members of the expedition completed the first circumnavigation of the globe, returning to Spain with only one of the original five ships and 18 surviving crew members. Despite his untimely death, Magallanes' expedition cemented his place in history as a brave and ambitious explorer who opened up new trade routes and expanded the known world.
